I completed my extensive Ophthalmology Specialist training in the West Midlands and Oxford regions, working at both the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and Oxford Eye Hospitals. I also gained further expertise by completing a Medical Retina fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. After completing my Ophthalmology training in 2014 I acquired entry to the General Medical Council Specialist Register and started practising as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. Within Ophthalmology, my subspecialty is Complex Cataract Surgery and Medical Retina with specialist interests in Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Diabetic eye disease and Retinal Vein Occlusions. I have expertise in the management of retinal and macular disease with laser and intravitreal therapies. In addition to this I also provide services in Glaucoma, Uveitis and General Ophthalmology.
My approach is to listen and take the time to understand and diagnose your eye condition. I am committed to providing the highest quality of care with warmth and compassion, drawing on extensive medical expertise so that patients receive the treatment that suits them best.
I was Clinical Lead for the age-related macular degeneration service at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and teaching trainees and Optometrists has shaped how I explain things: slowly, clearly and with time for questions.

Monofocal lenses
Surgery is the only way to remove a cataract, so the real question is timing.
Toric lenses
- Astigmatism, which a toric lens can correct
- Monofocal lenses: clear vision at one distance, usually far, with glasses for reading.
- Toric lenses: correct astigmatism during the same operation.
- Extended Depth Of Focus and multifocal lenses: may reduce reliance on glasses, with trade-offs such as haloes, discussed case by case.

Retinal laser, part of my care
I also offer retinal laser treatment. A focused beam of light treats small areas of the Retina, and I explain beforehand what to expect.
Diabetic retinopathy
Laser Photocoagulation is used to treat proliferative diabetic retinopathy and in some instances can also be used to treat macular oedema.
Retinal tears and holes
Laser Photocoagulation may be required to seal retinal holes or tears which if left untreated can progress to retinal detachment.
Retinal vein occlusion
In addition to intravitreal injections, in some instances laser photocoagulation may be required to manage a retinal vein occlusion.
Conditions
Conditions I diagnose and treat
- Cataract: cloudy, dim or dazzled vision
- Age-related macular degeneration: wet and dry AMD
- Diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy: screening, laser and injections
- Retinal vein occlusion: sudden onset of blurry vision
- Central serous chorioretinopathy: fluid under the Retina
- Uveitis: inflammation inside the eye
- Glaucoma: raised intraocular pressure with optic nerve damage. This requires regular monitoring and is usually treated with eye drops
- Dry eye: gritty, sore and itchy eyes requiring frequent lubrication
- Blepharitis: inflammation of the eyelids and meibomian glands
- Chalazion: a blocked meibomian gland causing a lesion in the eyelid
- Eyelid cysts: comfort and eyelid health

Distortion or straight lines appearing wavy can be a sign of age-related macular degeneration, and a simple grid helps you notice this early.

Wear your usual reading glasses and hold the grid at a comfortable reading distance.

Cover one eye and look steadily at the centre dot.

Check whether any lines look wavy, blurred or missing, then repeat with the other eye.

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can contact me directly as a self-pay patient. Some insurers ask for a GP or Optometrist referral before they cover your care, so check your policy first.
Will I speak to Miss Mall directly?
Yes. There is no call centre: calls and emails come straight to my own practice, and I aim to reply within 24 hours, before and after surgery.
How much does a consultation cost?
A new consultation is £260 and a follow-up £195 (fees may vary slightly by hospital). Surgery is quoted after I have assessed your eyes, and each hospital gives a package price, finance options are available to spread the cost of treatment.
Which insurers do you work with?
I am recognised by most major UK insurers, including Bupa (fee assured), AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Cigna, Aetna, Allianz, The Exeter, General & Medical, Healix, Saga and Benenden. Your insurer will usually pre-authorise surgery and I help with the paperwork. Check your excess and exclusions first.
How long does cataract surgery take?
Routine cataract surgery usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how complex it is. I normally recommend waiting 2 weeks before driving, and the legal minimum is meeting the DVLA eyesight standard.
Can both eyes be treated?
I generally do one eye at a time but in certain circumstances both eyes can be done on the same day.
